Retraining funded by the employment agency
The education voucher is discretionary: who qualifies, how to prepare for the decisive meeting, and what follows once it is issued.
β Checked: 01/08/2026
Germany funds adult retraining more readily than people assume, but not automatically: the education voucher lies within the agencyβs discretion and is not an entitlement. What is decided is not your wish to change careers but the likelihood of being hired after the training.
βΊ More about this route
This three-step route covers the procedure in full: who falls within the supported group and why the reasoning matters more than the form, how the decisive counselling meeting works, and what follows once the voucher is issued β choosing an accredited provider, money during the course and the obligations that come with it.
For migrants this path matters for one particular reason: lacking a qualification recognised in Germany places a person squarely in the group the funding exists for. What feels like an obstacle works here as an argument.
WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME
- Choosing a course first and going to the agency afterwards. A contract signed before the voucher is issued is generally not reimbursed retrospectively.
- Building the conversation on motivation. What is assessed is placement likelihood, and a wish to study does not answer that question.
- Taking the schoolβs word on accreditation. The proof belongs in writing: without it the voucher simply does not apply.
- Not asking about travel and childcare costs. These are separate applications and are almost never made after the fact.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE
Who typically gets approved?βΎ
Those with poor market prospects without it: the unemployed, those facing redundancy, and people without a qualification recognised in Germany. That last group is large among migrants, and it works in their favour.
Do benefits continue during the course?βΎ
As a rule yes: unemployment benefit continues during approved training, and travel and childcare costs can be covered through separate applications. Confirm the specifics before the course starts.
What should I do if refused?βΎ
Ask for the reasoning and what would need to change. A discretionary refusal often dissolves through a different framing of the goal, a different occupation, or evidence of demand from job adverts. An objection is possible, but a second conversation is usually faster.
Which documents belong ready before the first meeting?βΎ
Your working history with dates, certificates and recognition decisions for foreign qualifications, medical documents if health rules out your previous work, and printouts of vacancies in the target occupation. With a complete folder the meeting is about substance rather than about what you will bring next time.
How much time passes before the course starts?βΎ
Several weeks usually lie between the first meeting and the first day of teaching: checking the conditions, the decision, then a provider with a suitable start date. Courses do not begin on arbitrary days, so a missed intake can push the start back by months.
