Unemployment Benefit ALG I

The two hard registration deadlines, the termination-agreement trap, 60/67 percent of net, and the side-income rules.

βœ“ Checked: 18/07/2026

Unemployment benefit of this type is an insurance payment, not social assistance: you paid contributions from every salary and are getting your own money back. For residence permit holders that matters separately β€” drawing it does not count as claiming social support and does not harm your status.

  1. 1

    STEP

Two Deadlines You Must Not Miss

Job-seeking registration: 3 months before the contract ends (or 3 days after learning of dismissal). Unemployment registration: in person on day one. Late = benefit ban (Sperrzeit).

  2. 2

    STEP

    How Much and How Long

60 percent of net pay (67 with a child). 12 contribution months within the last 30 = 6 months of benefits; longer contributions extend it (up to 24 from age 58).

  3. 3

    STEP

Duties β€” and Side Income Without Losses

The benefit is a contract with duties: applications, appointments, availability. Side jobs up to 15 hours/week are allowed; €165 a month stays uncounted.

β€Ί More about this route

This three-step route covers everything: the two registration deadlines that must not be missed, how the amount and duration are calculated, and the obligations while receiving it along with the rules on additional earnings.

The biggest trap appears before unemployment itself: a termination agreement signed with your employer counts as ending the job voluntarily and normally triggers a twelve-week block on payment. That decision is made before signing, not after.

WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Does claiming this harm my residence permit?β–Ύ

No. It is an insurance benefit from your own contributions rather than social assistance and, unlike basic income support, it does not count as recourse to public funds when your permit is extended.

How much is paid and for how long?β–Ύ

The amount is a share of your previous net earnings, higher for those with children. The duration depends on your contribution history and age, and the exact period is stated in the award decision.

When do I have to register?β–Ύ

Twice: as a jobseeker as soon as you know the employment is ending, and as unemployed from your first day without work. The first deadline is very short and is the one most often missed.

Can I earn on the side while claiming?β–Ύ

Yes, within set limits on hours and earnings. Exceeding them reduces the payment, and unreported earnings lead to a repayment demand, so report in advance.
