ROUTE
Degree Recognition
Half of newcomers need no recognition at all β check anabin in 5 minutes. Otherwise: ZAB for β¬208 or the professional authority, with paths to close deficits.
β Checked: 15/08/2026
The central question on this route is not how recognition works, but whether you need it at all. For non-regulated professions β IT, marketing, business, design β the state requires nothing: your employer alone decides, and an anabin record or a credential assessment is normally all they want to see.

βΊ More about this route
Regulated professions are the smaller but harder part: doctor, teacher, nurse, civil engineer, lawyer. Without recognition you simply may not practise, and the decision rests with the specialist authority of the individual federal state β not with the company that wants to hire you.
The route works through three steps: establish whether you need recognition at all (anabin, type of profession, responsible body), choose the procedure (a ZAB credential assessment for β¬208, or an application to the state authority), and prepare for the most common outcome β partial equivalence, which lands on nearly half of applicants in regulated professions.
On timing: ZAB takes 2β3 months, a case at a specialist authority 3β4 months once your documents are complete, and any follow-up qualification another 6 to 18 months. Almost all of it can be started from abroad β which is also the right order, because recognition already in hand speeds up both the visa and the hiring.

WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME
- Pursuing a procedure your profession never required. For non-regulated occupations no formal recognition exists β chasing it anyway burns months at an authority that was never responsible for you.
- Reading partial recognition as a rejection. The deficit notice is a map of what is missing, not a verdict on your degree: only the gaps it names have to be closed, not the whole course of study again.
- Underestimating the language. Most procedures require B2, and medicine adds a professional language examination on top β language becomes the bottleneck far more often than the assessment of your qualifications.
- Seeking advice only after a rejection. The IQ network advises free of charge and knows the practice of the exact office deciding your case. Asked beforehand it saves months; afterwards all that remains is an appeal within one month.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE
Can I work while the procedure is running?βΎ
In non-regulated professions, immediately β nothing is holding you back anyway. In regulated ones it depends on the profession and the federal state: doctors frequently receive a provisional licence and work under supervision before full approbation. Apply for it together with the main application, as it pays for the waiting time.
Who pays for the follow-up qualification if I cannot?βΎ
There is a recognition grant for low earners, programmes run by the federal states, the IQ network and the Federal Employment Agency. Depending on the case, course fees, examination costs and sometimes living costs are covered. The system is deliberately built around requalification: the state wants you at full qualification and contributes to getting you there.
Is a credential assessment worth it if my profession is not regulated?βΎ
It is never mandatory and often useful. In hiring it replaces an argument about an unfamiliar university name with an official document, and visa sections and immigration offices ask for it regularly. It also does not expire β once issued, it stands indefinitely.
I hold several degrees β which one should I have assessed?βΎ
The one the intended work is based on. An assessment always covers one specific qualification rather than an educational biography, and each additional one carries its own fee. In regulated professions the question resolves itself: what counts is the degree belonging to that profession.
Is recognition valid across all of Germany?βΎ
Usually yes: a medical approbation, for instance, is valid nationwide even though a single federal state granted it. For school teaching and certain chamber professions the states remain autonomous, so relocating can bring additional requirements. If your case is still open, ask the authority before you move whether the application transfers or has to be filed again.
