Educator (Erzieher): degree recognition in Germany
🔴 Without recognition you may not work in this profession.
This profession is regulated: access is decided not by an employer but by a competent authority — the one in your federal state. The yardstick is § 9 BQFG: your qualification counts as equivalent if there are no substantial differences from the German training.
Erzieher — the German early-years educator — is a profession many underestimate: here it is state-recognised and access is regulated, whereas in many countries of origin it is an ordinary university degree with no special protection. That asymmetry is exactly why a pedagogy degree does not automatically produce state recognition here.
Who decides
State authority granting official recognition
What to do
- The competent body is the state office for official recognition, usually attached to the ministry of education or social affairs.
- The German benchmark is vocational-college training with a strong practical component, not university study. Missing practice is therefore more often the sticking point than missing theory.
- On partial recognition: an adaptation course, often alongside work in a facility — you work and qualify at the same time.
- In the meantime, work as a supporting or second staff member in a group: possible in many states and the usual entry while the procedure runs.
Where people get stuck
Proof of practice is the hurdle, and it is too often assembled too late. Employment references from kindergartens and schools in your country of origin, with hours and age groups, are worth hard cash here — obtain them while you still have the contacts.
If you still need to immigrate
Important if you still need to immigrate: for the skilled-worker visa under § 18a AufenthG the qualification alone is not enough — § 18 (2) no. 4 AufenthG requires that equivalence HAS been established. You may not need recognition to work, but you do need it for the visa.
Frequently asked
I studied pedagogy at university — is that not enough?
Not automatically. The German benchmark is vocational-college training with a high practical share. A purely academic degree can be stronger in content and still incomplete in practice — that is precisely what the authority assesses.
May I work in a nursery while the procedure runs?
In many states yes, as a supporting or second staff member in the group. A position as a specialist with own responsibility for a group requires official recognition.
Who pays for the adaptation course?
It can often be completed alongside work at the employer. In addition the Anerkennungszuschuss funds qualification measures with up to €3,000 per person where annual income is below €32,000 gross (€50,000 for married couples).
