Architect: degree recognition in Germany

This profession is regulated: access is decided not by an employer but by a competent authority — the one in your federal state. The yardstick is § 9 BQFG: your qualification counts as equivalent if there are no substantial differences from the German training.
For architects it is not the degree that is recognised — it is entry in the register of architects, granted by the Chamber of Architects of your federal state under that state’s Architects Act. Sixteen states, sixteen laws: required experience, evidence and deadlines differ, which is why a blanket answer for architects is never right.

What to do
- Decide the federal state where you will work — it determines the applicable law, not just the address.
- Apply for entry in the register of architects at that state’s Chamber of Architects.
- Prove study plus practical work: states typically require several years of professional practice after graduation — the degree alone rarely carries the entry.
- Without entry: you may design and plan, but not call yourself an architect — and the right to submit building applications is tied in the state building codes to exactly this entry.
Where people get stuck
The commonest misconception is that entry is a formality after the diploma. In fact the required professional practice is the real hurdle — and practice from your home country counts if it is properly documented. Collect and translate references, project lists and employer confirmations before they become unreachable.
If you still need to immigrate
For a visa or the Blue Card a recognised or comparable higher-education degree is enough (§ 18 (3) no. 2 AufenthG) — in practice anabin H+ or a ZAB statement. For the Blue Card the ZAB issues the statement in two weeks instead of three months.

May I work as an architect without being on the register?
You may design and plan, and work as an employee in a practice. What you may not do: use the professional title and submit building documents yourself. That is exactly where collaboration ends and personal responsibility begins.
I am registered in one state — does it apply in another?
You may use the title nationwide. But if you move your centre of life or your practice, a transfer to the new state’s register is envisaged. Ask the receiving chamber before the move, not after.
Does professional experience from abroad count?
Yes, it is assessed and as a rule credited. What decides is provability: type of projects, your own responsibility, duration. A project list confirmed by your former employer is worth more here than any extra certificate.
