SCHUFA: Report and Score
The free GDPR report, what really moves the score (not your salary!) and how to remove wrong entries.
β Checked: 15/08/2026
SCHUFA is not a government register and not a file on your life β it is a private credit bureau that calculates how likely you are to pay your bills. Your salary, your balance and your nationality play no part in it. Contracts and payment behaviour do: long, smoothly serviced contracts count in your favour, while unpaid bills after two reminders, debt collection and scattered credit applications count against you.
βΊ More about this route
The route separates three things people constantly confuse. First, the free Datenkopie under Article 15 GDPR β the complete list of your entries, available as often as you like and arriving by post in one to three weeks. Second, the paid BonitΓ€tsAuskunft at around β¬30 β the short certificate landlords ask for. Third, the score itself, which can be read by its rules rather than by rumour.
The third step is correction. Errors are common: people with the same name, old addresses, a debt sold twice to collectors. On your objection the bureau must verify the entry with the creditor, the disputed entry is blocked while that runs, and without confirmation it is deleted. Beyond that, the SCHUFA ombudsman and the state data protection authority both work free of charge.
WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME
- Ordering the β¬29.95 report. Next to the free Article 15 GDPR Datenkopie the site always advertises a paid product β the law gives you a free copy of all your own data, with no limit on how often you request it.
- Handing a landlord the full Datenkopie. It contains far too much detail about you; the short BonitΓ€tsAuskunft certificate exists for flat applications, and payslips plus a Mietschuldenfreiheitsbescheinigung are often enough.
- Ordering the report on the day of the viewing. Post takes one to three weeks β the Datenkopie belongs at the start of your flat search, not in the moment someone asks for it.
- Paying off a debt and waiting for the creditor to report it. Far better to request the Erledigungsbescheinigung straight away and send it to SCHUFA yourself: the status changes to settled, and deletion periods run from the payment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE
Where do I start if I need SCHUFA quickly for a flat?βΎ
By working out which document is actually being asked for. Landlords want the short BonitΓ€tsAuskunft certificate, which is quick and paid. The free Datenkopie is not designed for that and takes one to three weeks by post β you order it in advance and for yourself, to know what is on file.
How long does it take to remove an incorrect entry?βΎ
About a month: after your objection the bureau must verify the entry with the creditor, and while that runs the entry is blocked, so it does not feed into the score. If the creditor does not confirm it, it is deleted. If things stall, the SCHUFA ombudsman and the data protection authority will step in, both free.
Is it worth checking at all if I have never missed a payment?βΎ
Yes, and once a year is enough. The typical errors arise through no fault of yours: matching names, old addresses, a contract taken out by a namesake, a debt sold twice. Fifteen minutes a year is insurance for your tenancy agreement and any future loan.
Does being new to Germany affect the score?βΎ
Not in itself: nationality and residence status do not feed into it, and an empty history is neutral rather than negative. Entries begin with your first contract β account, mobile plan, tenancy. The only thing to avoid in the early months is scattering applications for credit cards and instalment plans.
