Reading the Score: What Actually Counts

The SCHUFA score is a payment probability. Contracts and payment discipline count — not salary or citizenship.

WHAT TO DO

The biggest myth: “SCHUFA knows my salary.” It does not. The score builds on contracts, credit and payment discipline — which is why a newcomer with an empty history and good income does not get a credit card instantly.

Before my mortgage I cleaned up for half a year: closed three unused cards and an old phone contract. The score rose noticeably.

Buy-on-invoice in online shops is also a contract with a SCHUFA trace. Two neglected 30 € bills can cost you the dream flat.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do banks see different scores?

Yes, SCHUFA delivers industry scores: banking, telecom, retail. A rejection in one place does not mean rejection everywhere.

What hurts the score most?

Negative entries after unpaid bills (after two reminders), frequent credit inquiries and many new contracts in a short time. Moving or checking your own file: no effect.

Does comparing loans hurt the score?

Not with a conditions inquiry — that one is neutral. A real credit application is visible to other banks. Comparison portals label the difference.

Do moves hurt it?

Frequent address changes are a weak negative signal. One or two moves are normal; neighbourhood-based geoscoring is off-limits for SCHUFA.
