The hard part is behind you

Customs, Datenblatt, Vollabnahme — done. This appointment is the simplest in the entire process: hand over documents, sign the SEPA mandate, pick up the plates. 30–60 minutes.

Prepare the night before

The non-EU document set is more extensive. Check everything against the list above — a single missing original means losing your appointment.

Number plates

The Schilderpräger is usually right inside or next to the Zulassungsstelle. Order the plates before your number is called — they’ll be ready by the time you come out of the office.

Max recommends:

I sorted all documents into a numbered folder in the order I expected to present them. The clerk worked through everything, scanned it all. Done in 25 minutes. Good preparation is half the battle.

Lea recommends:

The whole journey from Ukraine to German plates took me 7 weeks. The longest waits: Datenblatt (3 weeks) and the TÜV appointment (2 weeks). The actual admin steps were quick. If you run things in parallel, 4–5 weeks is realistic.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How is this different from the EU route appointment?

Slightly more documents: the Einzelgenehmigung § 21 and Zoll-Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung replace the CoC, and the Datenblatt is also presented. The procedure at the desk is identical.

What happens to the original foreign documents?

The foreign vehicle title is permanently retained by the Zulassungsstelle. The office notifies the country of origin to de-register the vehicle. You receive Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (always in the car) and Teil II (store safely at home).
