Frequently asked questions

What is the Mietstufe and where does it come from?

It is your municipality’s rent level (I–VII), fixed in the Wohngeldverordnung. It sets the maximum rent that counts in the calculation. We derive it from your postal code: the annex to the WoGV is matched against the federal statistical office’s official municipality register — all states, 8,159 postal codes.

Which rent do I enter?

The Bruttokaltmiete: base rent plus cold utilities (water, waste, etc.). Without heating, electricity and garage — those do not count for Wohngeld.

Why is the result zero?

Either the income is too high or the rent is already covered. Wohngeld is for working people on modest incomes; with very low income you fall under Bürgergeld instead.

How accurate is the calculation?

The formula and coefficients are official (§ 19, § 12 WoGG), and the main § 17 allowances are included. The income assessment is simplified, so the result is a guide. The authority makes the binding calculation.

Why does my postal code ask me to pick the level myself?

Some postal codes cover several municipalities with different rent levels. We then preset the lowest and ask you to check: see which municipality your address belongs to and pick its level. If the code is missing entirely, the digits are probably off — the register covers all of Germany.
