Frequently asked questions
Was the 3-year citizenship really abolished?
Yes. The Bundestag abolished the accelerated 3-year naturalisation (C1 + special integration) on 8 October 2025. The standard period is 5 years of lawful residence; spouses of German citizens still qualify after 3 years of residence and 2 years of marriage.
Is dual citizenship still allowed?
Yes — this part of the 2024 reform remains: you do not have to give up your original passport when naturalising. Check your home country’s rules, though.
Do university years count towards citizenship?
Yes — for citizenship, time on a student permit (§ 16b) counts in full; what matters is total lawful residence. For permanent residency, study years typically count only half.
Should I get PR first or apply straight for citizenship?
If the dates are close, many apply directly for citizenship. But PR is often reachable earlier (Blue Card: 21–27 months) and immediately ends renewals and employer ties. PR is not a prerequisite for citizenship.
What interrupts the residence clock?
Short trips do not; gaps between permits or stays abroad over 6 months can wipe out accumulated time. Clarify disputed periods with the authority in advance.
I receive welfare benefits — do I stand a chance?
Citizenship requires a self-secured livelihood, with exceptions for benefits received through no fault of your own (caring for a child under 3, studying, recent job loss). PR requirements are stricter.
How long does processing take?
Depending on the city, 6 months to over 2 years (Berlin has the longest queues). Apply as soon as you qualify and submit a complete file — missing documents are the top cause of delays.
