Leaving the Church

8–9 percent of your tax for a membership born from a registration checkbox. What it costs you, how to exit in one appointment β€” and what actually changes.

βœ“ Checked: 15/08/2026

Church tax in Germany arises not from attending church but from a field on the residence registration form. State a denomination there, and from that moment the tax office withholds eight or nine percent of your income tax β€” automatically, alongside your salary.

β€Ί More about this route

This two-step route supplies the basis for a decision and the procedure: what it actually costs you per year, what membership provides and what leaving removes, and how to complete the departure in a single appointment at the local court or registry office depending on your state.

The decision is personal and not reducible to money: leaving means giving up a church wedding, baptism and funeral, and it can affect employment with church-run organisations, of which Germany has many. That is why this route starts with the calculation and the consequences rather than the form.

WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Where did my membership come from if I never joined?β–Ύ

Usually from the denomination field on the form at your first residence registration. What you state there goes to the tax office, and church tax is withheld alongside income tax without separate notification.

What does it cost per year?β–Ύ

Eight or nine percent of your income tax depending on the state β€” not of your salary. On a middle income that is a noticeable annual sum, and the exact figure appears as its own line on your payslip.

Where is the declaration made?β–Ύ

Depending on the state, at the local court or the registry office, in person and with ID. Procedure and fee differ, so check your own state beforehand to avoid going twice.

What changes besides the money?β–Ύ

Church weddings, baptisms and funerals fall away, and in individual cases employment with church-run bodies is affected. Rejoining is possible but runs as a separate procedure through the church itself.
