Cold maths over principle: fighting a €20 no-points fine costs more in nerves than money. Fighting a driving ban when you drive for a living is mandatory. In between: run the full numbers.

WHAT TO DO
› Details and tips
Once a year I query my points via the KBA portal with eID — 5 minutes. I knew a driver who learned of his 7 points a week before the eighth: no surprises allowed here.
The voluntary driving-fitness seminar removes one point — but under § 4 (7) StVG only at a standing of one to five points, and only once in five years. Wait until six and the discount is gone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do points expire on their own? ▾
Yes: 1-point entries after 2.5 years, 2 points after 5, 3 points after 10 years. The KBA shows your balance free via online query with eID.
How many points — and what do they mean for my residence permit? ▾
Flensburg counts 1 (minor) to 3 points (criminal) per case; at 8 the licence is gone. For permits and citizenship what matters is not points but fines from 90 daily rates or verdicts.
A driving ban would cost my job — options? ▾
Two: a lawyer overturns the ban (on procedural errors) or converts it into a higher fine — courts do this when livelihoods are at stake. No automatism; it takes argument.
What is the MPU and when does it apply? ▾
The medical-psychological assessment (MPU) can be ordered by the authority to check your fitness to drive — typically after 1.6 per mille alcohol, drug-driving or a licence revocation over 8 points. It is expensive and must be passed to get the licence back.
