In big cities filing is increasingly online-only (Berlin: LEA online form), elsewhere by post or in person. Biometrics are always taken in person — no fingerprints, no eAT card.
Cost of getting it wrong
Do not postpone the fee: without payment the application can sit idle while you believe it is “filed”.
I paid the fee by card on site and got the fiction certificate at once — with it I worked and lived calmly while the chip was printed. A full proof of legality, not a stopgap.

Lea recommends:
Check with the caseworker whether your fiction certificate allows work and travel — these two points differ by type and shape your coming months.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What happens at the appointment?▾
Document check, biometrics, the fee (usually 93–100 €), issuance of the fiction certificate for the production time. The eAT chip is printed over weeks and arrives separately.
Can I travel abroad with a fiction certificate?▾
Careful: not every fiction certificate allows re-entry. Clarify the type with the caseworker BEFORE travelling — the wrong paper means being stuck abroad.
How long until the finished eAT?▾
Usually 4–8 weeks after biometrics. The office notifies you when the card is ready — that needs another short visit with the fiction certificate.
How long does the decision take?▾
A few weeks to several months, depending on the ABH’s workload. Your residence and work rights are protected meanwhile by § 81(4) — if you filed on time.
Does everyone pay the same fee?▾
No: Turkish citizens pay reduced rates (association agreement), children under 18 pay half. The fee is not refunded if the extension is refused.
Can I apply for family members too?▾
Each permit holder files their own application, but families often get a joint appointment — mention it when booking.
